Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley to helm new ‘Star Trek’ movie
Filmmaking duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley set to reboot the ‘Star Trek’ franchise with a standalone film for Paramount.
Indi, Nov 16 : A brand new voyage into the Star Trek universe is officially underway, with filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley stepping in to write and direct the next film in the iconic sci-fi franchise. Known for blending humour, adventure and emotional depth in projects like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the Spider-Man: Homecoming screenplay, the duo’s involvement was first reported by Variety.
Paramount has confirmed that the upcoming film will not continue the timeline of the JJ Abrams reboot series. This means Chris Pine and the rest of the Kelvin Timeline cast are not expected to return. Interestingly, Pine had previously collaborated with Goldstein and Daley on Honor Among Thieves, but the new project will chart its own direction.
The story remains under wraps, but studio insiders describe the film as a completely standalone entry unconnected to earlier movies, current TV shows, or previous development attempts. The goal, sources say, is to give Star Trek a refreshed cinematic identity after years of stalled projects.
Since Star Trek Beyond released in 2016, multiple attempts to revive the franchise have faltered. Chris Hemsworth nearly reprised his role as Captain Kirk’s father in a time-travel storyline; Quentin Tarantino developed a 1930s gangster-inspired Star Trek concept; and directors Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman both worked on versions that progressed as far as set construction before being shelved. Hawley has since moved to FX’s Alien: Earth, while Shakman is now directing Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Goldstein and Daley, celebrated for their sharp comedic sensibilities and inventive storytelling in films like Game Night, Horrible Bosses, Vacation, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, are now set to steer the franchise toward a fresh, modern reinvention.
Their appointment has sparked renewed excitement that Star Trek could finally return to the big screen with a bold new vision.
