Jr NTR, Janhvi Kapoor Deepfake Row Sparks Strong Industry Reaction

Actors and filmmaker Chiranjeevi condemn the misuse of artificial intelligence after a manipulated video linked to the ‘Chuttamalle’ song circulates online.

Hyderabad, Oct 4: A manipulated artificial intelligence generated video featuring footage of Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor from the song Chuttamalle has triggered widespread concern across the Indian entertainment industry, with several prominent actors speaking out against the misuse of technology.

The altered clip, which began circulating widely on social media, uses material from the song featured in Devara: Part 1. Reports described the video as sexually explicit and non-consensual, prompting strong condemnation from Jr NTR and other members of the film fraternity.

Jr NTR responded publicly on October 3 and called the incident deeply offensive. He also warned those responsible that he would pursue legal measures against both the creators and people involved in spreading the material.

The actor urged social media users not to watch, share or engage with the manipulated content, pointing out that AI-based abuse can affect anyone.

His response also called for stronger action from governments and authorities against the misuse of artificial intelligence.

Actor demands legal action

Jr NTR’s reaction came after the video began gaining attention online. The actor strongly objected to the use of AI to alter existing footage and turn it into material that had no connection with the original work.

He made it clear that the issue was not simply about an edited entertainment clip but about the misuse of technology to target an individual.

The actor also appealed to users to avoid amplifying the material. His warning highlighted a major difficulty surrounding deepfakes: even when an original post is removed, copies can continue to circulate across multiple platforms.

The incident has therefore renewed concerns within the entertainment community over how quickly artificial intelligence can be used to manipulate celebrity images and videos.

Vijay Deverakonda backs Jr NTR

Actor Vijay Deverakonda also responded to the controversy and supported Jr NTR’s call for stronger action.

Deverakonda described the misuse of AI in this case as extremely serious and called for firm measures to prevent similar incidents. His response added another prominent voice to the growing discussion around digitally altered content involving actors.

The actor’s intervention reflects a broader concern in the film industry, where photographs, promotional clips and scenes from movies are increasingly being repurposed using generative artificial intelligence.

Unlike conventional editing, AI-generated manipulation can produce highly convincing material that may appear authentic to viewers who are unfamiliar with the original footage.

Chiranjeevi expresses concern

Megastar Chiranjeevi also condemned the incident and described himself as deeply disturbed by the misuse of AI.

He said the matter should not be ignored and indicated that he would take it up with relevant bodies, including representatives of the Telugu film industry.

His response has broadened the issue beyond the actors directly affected by the manipulated video. The controversy has raised questions about the responsibility of technology companies, social media platforms and users when harmful synthetic material spreads online.

The incident has also renewed calls for stronger safeguards around the use of celebrity likenesses.

Why the controversy matters

The original Chuttamalle song became widely recognised after its release as part of Devara: Part 1, starring Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor. Existing footage from the film and its promotional material has since become a source for online edits, fan creations and other forms of digital content.

However, the latest manipulation crossed a different line because the material was reportedly transformed into sexually explicit content without the consent of those depicted.

That distinction is important in the wider debate surrounding artificial intelligence. Technology that can be used for creative filmmaking, visual effects and entertainment can also be misused to manufacture false or harmful material.

For public figures, the problem is particularly difficult because their images and performances are already widely available online.

The controversy demonstrates how an actor’s legitimate work can potentially be taken out of its original context and manipulated into something entirely different.

Growing pressure for stronger AI safeguards

The entertainment industry’s reaction comes at a time when deepfake technology is becoming increasingly accessible.

Artificial intelligence tools can now modify faces, voices and video sequences with comparatively little technical expertise. While such tools can have legitimate applications in filmmaking and post-production, their misuse has created serious concerns involving privacy, reputation and consent.

The Chuttamalle controversy has placed these concerns back in the spotlight in India.

Jr NTR’s appeal for stronger regulation reflects a demand for clearer accountability when synthetic media is deliberately created to harm or humiliate someone. The challenge becomes even greater when the content is rapidly reposted across different platforms.

Removing one upload may not be enough if multiple accounts have already copied or redistributed the material.

The issue also puts responsibility on ordinary social media users. Sharing manipulated content, even as a joke or out of curiosity, can significantly increase its reach. Jr NTR therefore specifically asked people not to interact with the video.

Industry solidarity

The responses from Jr NTR, Vijay Deverakonda and Chiranjeevi indicate that the controversy has resonated beyond the immediate cast of Devara.

Their statements have highlighted the need to distinguish between harmless digital creativity and technology being used to produce non-consensual or degrading material.

The incident could also encourage more discussions within the film industry about how performers’ digital likenesses are protected.

As studios increasingly use artificial intelligence in visual effects, dubbing, restoration and other areas of production, the industry is simultaneously having to confront the risks associated with the same technology.

For actors, the central concern is control over their image and identity. For audiences, the episode is another reminder that not every video circulating online represents a genuine recording.

The controversy surrounding the manipulated Chuttamalle clip is therefore likely to remain part of a larger conversation about AI, consent and digital responsibility.

For now, Jr NTR has indicated that legal action will be pursued against those responsible for producing and distributing the material. The strong reaction from other members of the film fraternity suggests that the Indian entertainment industry is increasingly unwilling to treat such incidents as routine social-media controversies.

The episode has once again demonstrated both the creative potential and the darker consequences of artificial intelligence, particularly when technology is used to alter real people without their permission.
