Locals accuse Mandi MP of delayed response and indifference; political reactions intensify across Himachal Pradesh

Manali, Sept 18: Actor turned politician and BJP MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, faced angry protests in her hometown Manali on Thursday as she visited areas devastated by last month’s heavy rains and floods.

In videos that went viral, residents vmany of them youth were seen waving black flags and shouting “Kangana go back, you are late” slogans, accusing her of arrogance and neglecting local concerns since her election victory.

The protests erupted when her motorcade arrived in disaster-hit areas of Kullu and Manali, where the Beas river had flooded on August 25–26, causing widespread damage. Demonstrators clashed verbally with BJP leaders accompanying Ranaut, demanding that she leave, while accusing her of showing up weeks after the tragedy.

Police officials said the protest, though heated, remained peaceful, and security arrangements ensured law and order was maintained.

This marks the first major backlash against Ranaut in her hometown since entering active politics. Known for her outspoken views and controversies, she has yet to issue an official response.

The incident triggered sharp political reactions across Himachal Pradesh. Opposition leaders said the protest reflected growing dissatisfaction with Ranaut’s “aloofness” as an elected representative.

“This is only the beginning. Public representatives must remain rooted in their constituencies,” a Congress leader commented.

Her supporters, however, defended her, calling the demonstrations politically motivated. “She has put Himachal on the national map. These protests don’t reflect the majority view,” a BJP worker argued.

Analysts believe the episode underscores the gap between celebrity status and political responsibility, stressing that Ranaut will need to balance national presence with grassroots connect to sustain her credibility as an MP.

Whether the “Go Back” slogans remain an isolated outburst or signal deeper public unrest will likely shape her political journey ahead.
