Kantara Case: High Court Gives Government Final Chance to Respond to Ranveer Singh’s Plea

Court extends interim protection to actor and directs government to file objections by March 17 in complaint over alleged remarks on Chamundi Daiva.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: The Karnataka High Court on Monday granted the state government a final opportunity to submit its response to a petition filed by Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh seeking the quashing of a complaint lodged against him over alleged remarks linked to the film Kantara Chapter 1.

The complaint accuses the actor of hurting religious sentiments by allegedly referring to the Chamundi Daiva character associated with the upcoming film as a “female ghost”.

Ranveer Singh has approached the High Court with a criminal petition requesting the cancellation of both the private complaint filed before a Bengaluru magistrate court and the FIR registered by the High Grounds Police Station.

The matter was heard by a single judge bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna.

During the proceedings, counsel appearing for the complainant, Prashanth Methal, submitted objections to the actor’s petition. Meanwhile, Additional State Public Prosecutor B. N. Jagadish requested more time to file the state’s response on behalf of the police.

The court accepted the request and directed the government to file its objections by March 17, making it clear that the date would serve as the final opportunity for submission.

The bench also extended its earlier interim order restraining the police from taking any coercive steps against the actor until the next hearing of the case.

The matter will now be taken up again after the state files its response next week.
