Kashmir Sees Warmer Days, Reduced Snowfall in Higher Altitudes

Kashmir Records Warmer Nights, Daytime Temperatures Dip After Snowfall

Srinagar, Feb 7: Kashmir witnessed a rise in minimum temperatures by 2 to 7 degrees Celsius across the valley on Saturday, even as fresh snowfall in higher altitudes lowered daytime temperatures, officials said.

In Srinagar, the night temperature climbed from -2.5°C to 3°C, while Gulmarg in Baramulla district recorded the coldest minimum at -6.5°C. Pahalgam saw a sharp rise, from -7.5°C to -0.5°C, and other areas reported lows of Qazigund 0.6°C, Kokernag -0.4°C, and Kupwara 1.4°C.

Fresh snow was reported in higher reaches of Gulmarg and Sonamarg, along with surrounding areas, while plains experienced light drizzle in the early hours. Officials noted that the snowfall and overcast skies caused a drop in daytime temperatures.

Kashmir is currently in the 20-day ‘Chillai Khurd’ period, which follows the harshest 40-day winter phase, ‘Chillai-Kalan’, and will be succeeded by the 10-day ‘Chillai Bachha’.
