Kashmir Valley Embraces Rain, While Snow Blankets Higher Elevations: A Weather Update

Srinagar, October 2: The meteorological office reported that parts of the picturesque Kashmir Valley received much-needed rainfall, bringing relief to the region, while the higher altitudes, including the strategic Zojila Pass, witnessed a fresh blanket of snowfall on Monday.

The Meteorological Office (MeT) confirmed that the Zojila Pass, a vital point on the Srinagar-Ladakh highway, was adorned with a fresh layer of snow, signaling the impending winter season. In addition to this, regions in south Kashmir, including Bandipora and Ganderbal, were drenched by the welcome showers, effectively breaking a prolonged dry spell that had prevailed.

According to meteorological sources, the current weather pattern entailed rain in various areas of south, north, and central parts of the Kashmir Valley. Meanwhile, the upper reaches of Doda-Kishtwar in the Jammu division were treated to the spectacle of snowfall. Samba, however, experienced rainfall, while the remainder of Jammu and Kashmir remained dry.

The meteorological forecast suggested that the rain would taper off by the afternoon, giving way to fair to partly cloudy weather in Kashmir, and partly to generally cloudy conditions in Doda within the Jammu division.

Furthermore, the MeT office projected that the weather would remain fairly to partly cloudy in both the Jammu and Kashmir regions from October 3 to October 8. However, it also noted a possibility of light to moderate rain or snowfall at scattered locations, with a 60-70 percent likelihood during October 9-10.

Farmers received encouraging news as the meteorological advisory assured that the weather would be conducive for harvesting and outdoor activities during this period.

Temperature-wise, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, reported a low of 11.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund recorded a temperature of 12.0 degrees Celsius and received 4.6mm of rainfall. Pahalgam, known for its scenic beauty, reported a low of 8.6 degrees Celsius along with 9.1mm of rainfall. Gulmarg, a popular tourist destination, recorded a low of 7.0 degrees Celsius.

The rain and snowfall not only brought respite to the residents of Kashmir but also added to the region’s breathtaking natural beauty, setting the stage for the transition into the upcoming winter season.
