Kathua, Sopore Deaths Discussed In Meeting With Amit Shah, Says CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, 12-02-2025: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has confirmed that the recent deaths in Kathua and Sopore were discussed during his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Addressing reporters in Ganderbal, Abdullah stated that the incidents were a key part of the conversation, emphasizing the need for a transparent and time-bound investigation to ensure accountability. His remarks come in response to criticism from opposition leader and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, who had expressed disappointment that Abdullah did not raise the matter with Shah. Dismissing these concerns, Abdullah clarified that the deaths were indeed discussed, and he insisted on a fair probe with strict action against anyone found responsible.

The two incidents in question have sparked outrage and concern across Jammu and Kashmir. In the Billawar area of Kathua district, a 26-year-old man, accused of links to militancy, allegedly took his own life on February 4 following alleged harassment by the police. Just a day later, on February 5, a truck driver in Sopore, Baramulla district, was fatally shot by the Army after allegedly refusing to stop at a security checkpoint. The deaths have triggered sharp reactions, with demands for justice and accountability from various quarters, including political leaders, civil society, and local residents.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Abdullah had earlier taken to social media, warning that such incidents threaten to alienate the very people whose trust is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the region. He assured the public that his administration is fully committed to seeking justice and had already taken up the issue with the Union Government. In addition to pressing for a central investigation, the J&K government has also initiated its own inquiries to ascertain the facts behind both cases.

Beyond the discussion on these sensitive incidents, Abdullah revealed that the issue of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir was also on the agenda during his meeting with Shah. The demand for the restoration of J&K’s statehood remains a pressing concern for political parties and residents, who continue to call for the reinstatement of full democratic rights. Abdullah underscored the importance of this issue, stressing that while J&K functions as a Union Territory, the central government has a crucial role in shaping its governance, particularly with regard to financial planning and the upcoming budget session.
