Kejriwal Claims 80% of Drugs Entering Punjab Now Come from BJP Ruled States
AAP chief says the supply from Pakistan has fallen sharply since 2022, while alleging that trafficking routes through neighbouring states remain a major challenge.
New Delhi, Sep 15: AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday targeted the BJP, claiming that the source of most drugs entering Punjab has shifted from Pakistan to states governed by the saffron party.
Kejriwal alleged that around 80 per cent of the drugs currently reaching Punjab are coming from BJP-ruled Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, while the share originating from Pakistan has declined to about 20 per cent.
“Today, only 20 per cent of the drugs come from Pakistan. Today, 80 per cent of the drugs are coming from BJP ruled states – Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, UP and Delhi,” Kejriwal said in a post on X in Hindi.
He questioned whether the BJP governments were unable or unwilling to curb the illegal drug trade in their respective states. Referring particularly to Gujarat, he said the party had been in power there for three decades and alleged that the state continued to witness a significant drug trade.
Kejriwal also highlighted measures taken by the AAP government in Punjab after it assumed office in 2022. He claimed that at that time, around 80 per cent of the drugs entering the state were coming from Pakistan.
According to the AAP leader, the Punjab government subsequently installed an anti-drone system to prevent the cross-border movement of narcotics and curb smuggling along the international border.
The former Delhi chief minister further alleged that narcotics enter India through Mundra Port in Gujarat and argued that preventing such trafficking falls under the responsibility of the BJP-led central government.
His remarks come amid renewed political debate over drug abuse in Punjab, with the state government facing criticism from the BJP. Several videos concerning drug abuse in the state have also circulated widely on social media in recent days.
Kejriwal urged the BJP to adopt measures implemented in Punjab and take stronger action against the illegal drug trade in states under its control.
