Kerala Celebrates as NASA Astronaut Reaches International Space Station
The state rejoices as Anil Menon launches aboard Soyuz MS-29 for Expedition 74, with leaders hailing the achievement as a proud moment for Kerala and India.
KOCHI, Jul 14: Kerala celebrated a landmark achievement in space exploration as Kerala origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon successfully launched to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard Russia’s Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft. His participation in Expedition 74 has sparked pride across the state, with political leaders and citizens applauding the remarkable accomplishment.
Menon’s journey marks another significant milestone for India’s global scientific footprint and highlights the growing contribution of people of Indian origin to international space missions. His successful launch was widely welcomed across Kerala, particularly in Palakkad district, where his ancestral roots are deeply connected.
The astronaut traces his family lineage to Chettur House in Ottappalam, the ancestral residence of his great-grandfather, Sir C. Sankaran Nair, one of India’s distinguished freedom-era leaders and a former president of the Indian National Congress. The historic association has added emotional significance to Menon’s latest achievement.
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar extended his congratulations, describing Menon as a source of immense pride for the state. Sharing his message on social media, the Governor recalled visiting Chettur House last year to pay homage to Sir C. Sankaran Nair.
Arlekar said the successful launch reflected the extraordinary achievements of individuals with roots in Kerala and expressed confidence that Menon’s mission would inspire aspiring scientists, engineers, and young students across the country to pursue careers in science and space research.
Anil Menon lifted off aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft, beginning his mission to the orbiting laboratory where he will participate in scientific experiments, technology demonstrations, and operational activities as part of Expedition 74.
The mission is expected to contribute to ongoing international research aimed at improving understanding of human health, space technology, and future deep-space exploration. The ISS continues to serve as a collaborative platform involving multiple space agencies from around the world.
Earlier, Kerala’s leadership had also acknowledged the significance of Menon’s mission. State leaders described the launch as a defining moment that reflects Kerala’s long-standing emphasis on education, scientific excellence, and innovation.
Citizens across the state celebrated the achievement through social media posts, community gatherings, and congratulatory messages, with many calling Menon an inspiration for the younger generation. Educational institutions also highlighted his journey as an example of perseverance, dedication, and academic excellence.
Anil Menon’s successful mission reinforces the growing presence of professionals of Indian origin in global space programmes and strengthens India’s reputation for producing world class scientists, engineers, and astronauts.
As Expedition 74 begins aboard the International Space Station, people in Kerala will closely follow Menon’s mission, hoping his achievements continue to inspire future generations to dream beyond Earth’s boundaries and contribute to humanity’s exploration of space.
