Kerala CM Calls on Media to Cover West Asia Conflict Responsibly
Pinarayi Vijayan emphasizes accuracy, credibility, and safety of expatriates in conflict coverage
India, March 6 – Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday called on media organisations to report developments related to the West Asia conflict responsibly, stressing that accurate and balanced coverage can help ease anxiety among expatriates and their families. The remarks came during an online meeting with editors from various media outlets.
Vijayan highlighted that almost every family in Kerala has ties to Gulf countries, making it crucial for news reports to be presented with caution. “News of conflict in the region can increase fear and anxiety among families here. Every report must be based on verified information from official channels,” he said.
The CM stressed that unverified content, rumours on social media, and sensational reporting of attacks or explosions could unnecessarily alarm expatriates. He urged media outlets to rely on credible sources such as the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian embassies, and official communications from the countries concerned.
Vijayan also recommended avoiding disclosure of personal details, including workplaces or addresses, unless essential. Reports should focus on safety advisories, official guidelines, and assistance mechanisms, including emergency contacts of Indian embassies, NORKA Roots services, and Ministry of External Affairs support.
He added that media can play a constructive role by highlighting expatriates’ issues such as employment concerns, travel restrictions, and security challenges, and by relaying this information to authorities. The interaction followed discussions at the recent Loka Kerala Sabha online meeting, reflecting the state’s commitment to the welfare of its overseas community.
