Kerala’s ‘Mitra 181’ Women’s Helpline Receives 5.66 Lakh Calls Since 2017
Round the clock service provides critical support to women and children in crisis
Kerala, Dec 02 : ‘Mitra 181’ women’s helpline has emerged as a vital support system for women and children in distress, handling more than 5.66 lakh calls since its launch in 2017 and providing critical interventions in nearly two lakh cases.
The toll free service operates 24/7, offering counselling, legal advice, emergency rescue, medical support, and referrals to safe shelters. It works closely with police, hospitals, ambulance networks, and other agencies to ensure timely and effective assistance.
Health Minister Urges Women to Use the Helpline
Health Minister Veena George encouraged women across Kerala to remember the 181 number for emergencies or situations requiring immediate help.
“The government and the Women Development Corporation stand firmly with those seeking justice, privacy, protection, and a chance to rebuild their dreams,” she said.
Support for Vulnerable Groups
Frequent users of the helpline include teenage girls, survivors of domestic violence, harassment victims, and members of the transgender community. The helpline provides confidential and compassionate assistance tailored to sensitive situations.
Operations and Team
Managing an average of 300 calls per day, the helpline is staffed by 12 professionally trained women with backgrounds in law and social work. They operate in three shifts to maintain uninterrupted service, with regular training programs to strengthen their capacity to handle high pressure cases.
