Kharge Demands Amit Shah Explain Student Crackdown in Parliament
INDIA bloc vows to raise police action against demonstrators and alleged financial irregularities during the ongoing Parliament session.
New Delhi, Aug 03 : Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday intensified the Opposition’s attack on the Centre, demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement in Parliament regarding the police action taken against students during recent protests. He also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond to allegations concerning the handling of donations made to the Ram Temple.
Following a meeting of floor leaders of the INDIA bloc in the Parliament House complex, Kharge said the Opposition would continue to seek accountability from the government on both issues during the current session.
In a post on social media platform X, Kharge asserted that the Home Minister should explain the reported use of lathicharge and pellet guns against students protesting over the NEET paper leak controversy. He further urged the Prime Minister to clarify allegations related to the reported theft of donations offered at the Shri Ram Temple, claiming the trust functioned under the Prime Minister’s oversight.
Opposition parties have consistently demanded a statement from Amit Shah on the police action that took place during student demonstrations on July 20. They have also sought his resignation, alleging excessive use of force against protesters.
The strategy meeting of the INDIA bloc brought together several senior leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Venugopal, Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav, Trinamool Congress MPs Mahua Moitra and Sagarika Ghose, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Sanjay Raut and Arvind Sawant, JMM’s Mahua Maji, CPI(M)’s John Brittas, CPI’s P. Santhosh Kumar and RSP’s N.K. Premachandran.
Leaders of the opposition alliance resolved to jointly press the government on allegations surrounding the Ram Temple donation issue while also highlighting concerns over the police response to student protests linked to the NEET paper leak. The bloc indicated that both matters would remain central to its strategy inside Parliament in the days ahead.
