Ladakh Violence: Wangchuk’s Wife Petitions SC for His Immediate Release

Detained under NSA after Ladakh protests, the climate activist’s wife challenges order citing violations and lack of communication.

New Delhi, Oct 3: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has approached the Supreme Court seeking his immediate release, days after he was detained under the National Security Act (NSA).

Wangchuk was taken into custody on September 26, two days after violent protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh left four people dead and nearly 90 injured. He is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail, Rajasthan.

In her plea, filed through advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare, Angmo challenged the legality of the detention and questioned the grounds for invoking NSA against her husband. She further alleged that she has not yet been provided with a copy of the detention order, a move she claimed violates procedural rules.

Angmo also stated that she has had no contact with Wangchuk since his detention. Meanwhile, the Ladakh administration has dismissed allegations of a “witch-hunt” or “smokescreen” targeting the activist.

The Supreme Court is expected to take up the plea soon, bringing the spotlight back on the growing tensions in Ladakh over demands for constitutional safeguards and statehood.
