Ladakh’s Urgo Phobrang Gets Solar Power Plant Boost Near Indo-China Border
15kW Solar Power Plant Brings Sustainable Electricity to Ladakh’s Remote Urgo Phobrang Village
Ladakh : Urgo Phobrang, a far flung village on the Indo-China border in Ladakh, has achieved a new milestone with the inauguration of a 15kW solar power plant, officials said on Wednesday.
Situated at an altitude of 14,500 feet in Leh district, near Lukung on the way to Hot Springs, Urgo Phobrang is the last village along the border. The project, executed by the Himmotthan Society with support from funding partner HDFC Bank Parivartan, aims to provide reliable, eco-friendly electricity to the village residents.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Chushul Constituency Councillor Konchok Stanzin as the Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the crucial role of renewable energy in improving living standards in remote villages while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Stanzin lauded the efforts of HDFC Bank Parivartan and the Himmotthan Society for implementing projects across the challenging terrain of Durbuk block, one of Ladakh’s most remote regions, where extreme weather and short working seasons make project execution difficult.
He also acknowledged other ongoing initiatives in the area, including Natural Resource Management (NRM) programs, smart schools, animal health camps, high-value crop promotion, and greenhouse projects.
Project Officer Stanzin Lakdan and Engineer Rigzen Norbu of Himmotthan Society, who played key roles in the solar plant’s execution, were present at the event.
With the solar power plant now operational, Urgo Phobrang will benefit from reliable lighting and enhanced energy access, improving household quality of life and enabling community-level activities during evening hours.
The initiative represents a significant step toward sustainable rural development, advancing clean energy adoption and promoting self-reliance in Ladakh’s border villages.
