Latest Weather Update: Rainfall in Parts of Kashmir, Snowfall Enlivens Gulmarg Ski Resort

Srinagar,12-03-2024 : Parts of the Kashmir Valley experienced light rainfall, while the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg received a fresh spell of snowfall in the past 24 hours, as per officials’ reports.

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar indicated that several areas in the Kashmir valley witnessed rainfall, with Gulmarg in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district receiving light snowfall. Over the past 24 hours until 0830 hours today, Gulmarg accumulated 2.0cm of snowfall and 2.2 mm of rainfall. Additionally, Pahalgam received 0.6mm of rainfall, Kupwara 0.2 mm, and Kokernag 1.2 mm of rainfall, according to the MeT office. While the weather is expected to remain dry today, there is a forecast of light to moderate rain and snow in various regions on March 13, accompanied by thunder and lightning with gusty winds. On March 14, the weather is predicted to be partially to generally cloudy, with the possibility of light rain and snow at some places, according to the MeT office. Additionally, there may be heavy snowfall in a few higher reaches, as suggested by an independent weather forecaster, Kashmir Weather.

The forecast extends to dry weather from March 15 to March 20, providing a glimpse into the upcoming weather conditions. Although the night temperature saw a drop at some stations, it remained above normal in the Kashmir Valley during the intervening nights of Monday and Tuesday. For instance, Srinagar recorded a low of 5.9°C, slightly higher than the 6.3°C from the previous night, indicating a 2.2°C above-normal temperature for the summer capital. Qazigund, located on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, registered a low of 5.8°C, while Kokernag maintained a similar temperature of 4.4°C for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. Pahalgam observed a drop in night temperature to 1.7°C from the previous night’s 2.2°C, still remaining 2.9°C above normal for the tourist destination.

Similarly, Gulmarg saw a decrease in temperature to -1.6°C from the previous night’s -1.0°C, indicating 1.7°C above-normal conditions for the ski resort. Kupwara maintained a temperature of 4.0°C for the second consecutive day, marking 1.7°C above normal for the frontier district, according to the MeT office’s data.
