Leh District in Ladakh Enforces Section 144, Curbing Processions and Rallies

Authorities Invoke Section 144 to Regulate Gatherings in Leh, Ladakh

Leh, 05-04-2024 : Authorities in the Leh district of Ladakh Union Territory have implemented Section 144 of the CrPC 1973 to maintain peace in the region. The decision comes in response to a report from Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh, indicating a potential threat to peace and public tranquility in the district. District Magistrate Leh, Santosh Sukhadeve, IAS, issued an order invoking Section 144 to prevent any disturbances and ensure the safety of human life.

The order prohibits the organization of processions, rallies, or marches without prior written approval from the District Magistrate. Additionally, the use of mounted vehicles or loudspeakers requires authorization from the competent authority. Public gatherings are strictly forbidden without prior approval, and individuals are cautioned against making statements that could disrupt communal harmony or public tranquility, potentially leading to law and order issues.

Compliance with the model code of conduct and adherence to the law in all activities is mandatory. The order emphasizes that it is being passed ex-parte as individual service is not feasible. Violation of this directive will result in punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

The order further warns that any violation will invite punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. It concludes by urging all individuals to ensure that they follow the model code of conduct and conduct all activities in accordance with the law.
