Intermittent showers, gusty winds and possible hailstorms forecast; dry spell likely from April 20 onwards

SRINAGAR, Apr 17: Under the influence of a continuing wet spell, the Kashmir Valley recorded light rainfall over the past 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting similar conditions to persist till Sunday.

According to official data, Srinagar received 2.6 mm of rainfall during the period. Among other regions, Qazigund recorded 4.4 mm, while Kupwara in north Kashmir witnessed 6 mm of precipitation. The famous ski destination Gulmarg emerged among the wetter locations with 7 mm rainfall, followed by tourist hotspot Pahalgam, which recorded 5.4 mm.

Night temperatures across the Valley remained above seasonal averages, with several stations reporting minimum temperatures 0 to 3 degrees Celsius higher than normal. Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 3.6°C.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted that the ongoing wet weather will continue across most parts of Kashmir till April 19. The forecast indicates partly to generally cloudy skies accompanied by intermittent light rain or thundershowers at multiple locations.

Weather activity is expected to be more prominent during morning and evening hours, with occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. There is also a possibility of hailstorms at isolated places, which could impact local agriculture and outdoor activities.

Looking ahead, conditions are likely to improve from April 20 to April 24, with mainly dry weather expected across the region. The dry phase may extend through April 25 and 26, although brief spells of light rain or thundershowers, along with gusty winds, cannot be ruled out at isolated places, particularly during afternoon hours.

The changing weather pattern highlights a transition phase in the Valley, as intermittent spring showers gradually give way to more stable conditions in the coming days.
