Literacy Must Go Beyond Reading and Writing: Jayant Chaudhary

NEW DELHI, Sep 8: Literacy should not be confined to the ability to read and write but must also include comprehension, practical application of knowledge, financial awareness and digital skills, Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary said on Tuesday.

Addressing the national level celebration of International Literacy Day in New Delhi, Chaudhary called for a broader understanding of literacy and education, stressing their role in empowering individuals and enabling them to participate meaningfully in society.

He said education should serve as a tool for empowerment, creativity and dignity while helping create informed, responsible and active citizens.

According to the minister, meaningful learning should enable people to understand information, apply their knowledge in everyday situations and navigate an increasingly digital and financially complex world.

Chaudhary also underlined the importance of developing curiosity, critical thinking and creativity among learners. He said young people need to be equipped not only with knowledge but also with the confidence and skills required to use it effectively in a rapidly changing environment.

He urged students, teachers and citizens to adopt a questioning mindset, challenge established practices and contribute innovative ideas towards the development of a new India.

The Ministry of Education is observing Literacy Fortnight from September 1 to 14 across the country to promote awareness and participation in literacy-related initiatives.

A range of programmes is being organised during the fortnight, including workshops, seminars, Gram Panchayat-level activities, rallies, street plays, registration drives and social media campaigns.

The initiatives are aimed at strengthening community participation and expanding awareness about the wider dimensions of literacy and lifelong learning.
