M.Y. Tarigami Files Nomination for Kulgam, Solidifying CPI(M)’s Strategic Position in Alliance-Backed Election
Kulgam, August 27: M.Y. Tarigami, a prominent leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kulgam, officially filed his nomination papers for the Kulgam constituency on Tuesday, indicating his candidacy for the upcoming assembly elections as part of a political alliance.
The Kulgam seat, traditionally associated with Tarigami, was allocated to the CPI(M) by both the Congress Party and the National Conference (NC). This allocation reflects a strategic decision by the alliance to consolidate its position in the region and leverage Tarigami’s established political presence. Tarigami has a notable record of electoral success, having secured victory in the Kulgam constituency for four consecutive terms since 1996. His long-standing relationship with the constituency underscores his deep-rooted influence and political significance in the area.
Initially, the CPI(M) had considered fielding a candidate for the Devsar constituency as well. However, following discussions within the alliance, it was decided that the CPI(M) would withdraw its candidate from Devsar. This change was confirmed after negotiations between Dr. Farooq Abdullah, a senior leader of the National Conference, and Tarigami. According to Omar Abdullah, a key figure in the NC, Dr. Abdullah’s intervention was pivotal in reaching an agreement. Tarigami, acknowledging the strategic importance of maintaining unity within the alliance, agreed to forgo the Devsar constituency.
This decision highlights the collaborative efforts of the alliance in ensuring a cohesive approach to the elections, focusing on maximizing their collective impact rather than spreading their resources too thin. As the election campaign progresses, Tarigami’s focus remains on addressing local issues and continuing his long-standing commitment to the Kulgam constituency.
