‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ Edges Past ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’ with Slight Day 1 Box Office Lead

Diljit Dosanjh starrer records a steady start on Day 1, outperforming rival releases by a narrow margin despite facing stiff competition across theatres.

Mumbai, June 13: Imtiaz Ali’s much anticipated period drama Main Vaapas Aaunga has begun its theatrical journey with a modest opening at the domestic box office. Released on June 12, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah in pivotal roles and draws inspiration from real life stories linked to the Partition of India.

The film generated considerable buzz ahead of its release through an extensive promotional campaign and strong social media presence. However, its first-day earnings indicate a cautious response from moviegoers despite the star studded cast and emotionally charged narrative.

According to early trade estimates, the film collected approximately Rs 1.15 crore on its opening day across India. The movie’s India gross collection stood at around Rs 1.38 crore, while the net domestic earnings reached Rs 1.15 crore. Industry observers noted that the film registered an overall occupancy of 12.22 percent on Friday, reflecting a moderate turnout in cinemas.

The historical drama was released across more than 2,300 screens nationwide, giving it a wide platform to attract audiences. While the opening figures remain below expectations for a film mounted on such a scale, trade analysts believe positive word-of-mouth could help improve collections over the weekend.

At the ticket windows, Main Vaapas Aaunga faced direct competition from Kangana Ranaut’s Bharata Bhhagya Viddhaata. Collection trends suggest that the Imtiaz Ali directorial managed to stay marginally ahead of its rival during the opening day, gaining a slight advantage in the early stages of the box-office race.

The film is also competing for audience attention against several other releases, including Manoj Bajpayee’s Governor, the romantic entertainer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, and the international release He Man and the Masters of the Universe. The crowded release calendar has intensified competition for screens and footfalls.

Audience reactions have remained mixed so far. While opinions on the film’s pacing and storytelling have varied, viewers and critics alike have widely praised the performances delivered by the lead cast. Diljit Dosanjh’s portrayal has drawn particular appreciation, with many highlighting the emotional depth he brings to the character. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah and newcomers Sharvari and Vedang Raina have also received positive mentions for their performances.

Set against one of the most significant chapters in Indian history, the film attempts to capture the human emotions, displacement and resilience experienced during the Partition era. Imtiaz Ali’s direction focuses on personal stories emerging from a turbulent period, blending history with emotional drama.

In addition to the lead actors, the ensemble cast includes Banita Sandhu, Danish Pandor, Kumud Mishra, Rajat Kapoor, Sanjay Suri, Jaipreet Singh, Dolly Ahluwalia, Vinod Nagpal, Manish Chaudhary, Anjana Sukhani, Rasika Agashe, Mashhoor Amrohi and Nikhat Khan.

With the opening day now behind it, all eyes will be on the weekend collections to determine whether the film can build momentum through positive audience feedback. The coming days are expected to be crucial in deciding the long-term box-office prospects of the Partition-based drama.
