29-09-2023 : After two days of relentless efforts, the Jammu Police have achieved a significant breakthrough by apprehending a gang of chain snatchers operating locally and across state borders. This operation has brought a sense of relief to the citizens, particularly women and the elderly, who had been targeted by these criminals. The police have successfully recovered the snatched gold chains from the arrested individuals.
The chain snatching incidents had created a sense of insecurity among the residents of Jammu city, with reports of such incidents occurring in areas like Sainik Colony, Greater Kailash, Gangayal, Satwari, and Trikuta Nagar. Citizens lodged complaints, leading to the filing of FIRs at various police stations across Jammu. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Chandan Kohli, provided insights into the modus operandi of these snatchers, who primarily targeted elderly and solitary women, often in isolated places.
To crack the case, the police utilized the aid of CCTV footage, which provided crucial images of the snatchers as well as the motorcycle they used during their criminal activities. Police teams from PS Bahu Fort, Channi, Gangayal, and Satwari, working under the supervision of SP South Shaheen Wahid and SDPO East Prupkar Singh, were assigned specific tasks. These tasks included collecting CCTV footage, tracking the culprits, studying their movement patterns, understanding their modus operandi, and ultimately identifying and apprehending the suspects.
Over the course of two days, the diligent police personnel, under the guidance of SP South Shaheen Wahid, tirelessly worked towards capturing these chain snatchers. The case posed unique challenges because unlike stolen vehicles or mobile phones, chains are small items that are difficult to recover once stolen. However, the relentless efforts paid off when the police managed to catch two snatchers in the act during another attempted snatching in Trikuta Nagar.
The apprehended individuals were identified as Ram Sevak, son of Beedal, and Dharmendra, also known as Ravi, son of Mannu, both residents of Shamli, Uttar Pradesh. During the investigation, it was revealed that they had been involved in multiple snatching incidents in District Jammu and had a history of similar crimes in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana. Their modus operandi included posing as Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims to evade suspicion. Additionally, six stolen gold chains and a stolen motorcycle were recovered from their possession.
In a subsequent development, two more suspects, identified as Akash Khushu, also known as Lalla, and Rahul Rawal, both residents of Durga Nagar, Jammu, were detained in connection with chain snatching cases. These individuals were found to be involved in multiple chain snatching incidents in Roop Nagar, Canal Road, Sarwal, and Paloura areas.
The arrests were made by a special team under the supervision of SP North Kulbir Handa, assisted by SDPO West Vikram Singh and SHO PS Janipur Inspector Sikander Singh. During the investigation, the accused confessed to snatching five gold chains from various locations in Jammu District using a KTM Duke motorcycle bearing Registration No. JK02 DC 8234. The stolen chains are expected to be recovered from Muthoot Finance Branch Talab Tillo, Jammu, where they had been sold. The accused individuals are liable for criminal charges, and further investigation into the cases is ongoing.
