Major Fire Guts Jio Office, Spreads to J&K Bank Branch in Rajbagh, Srinagar
Quick Response by Firefighters Prevents Major Disaster in Srinagar’s Commercial Hub
Srinagar, Nov 5: A massive fire broke out on Wednesday evening at the Jio office located inside the Metro International Complex near Hattrick Chowk in Rajbagh, Srinagar, sending panic across the bustling commercial area. The flames soon spread to an adjacent branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, engulfing a significant portion of the building before fire and emergency services managed to bring the blaze largely under control.
According to officials, thick plumes of smoke were first noticed billowing from the upper floors of the complex, housing several corporate offices and retail establishments. Eyewitnesses said employees and nearby shopkeepers rushed out in panic as the fire rapidly intensified, spreading through electrical panels and office partitions made of combustible material.
Within minutes, multiple fire tenders from the Fire and Emergency Services Department, assisted by local police and volunteers, arrived at the scene to contain the blaze. “Firefighting operations were launched immediately after receiving the distress call. Our teams worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, which are closely packed in this commercial hub,” said an official from the Fire and Emergency Services Department.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire originated in the Jio office, possibly due to a short circuit, before extending to the adjoining Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch housed within the same complex. However, officials have not confirmed the exact cause and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the source of ignition and assess the total damage.
A senior police officer at the spot said that a swift and coordinated response helped avert a potential disaster. “We immediately cordoned off the area and ensured that no one remained inside the building. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or casualties so far,” he said.
The firefighting operation, which lasted for several hours, involved more than half a dozen fire tenders. Firefighters used water cannons and foam extinguishers to tackle the flames, while electricity to the surrounding area was temporarily cut off to prevent further hazards. Passersby and onlookers gathered near the site as firefighters battled dense smoke and high temperatures emanating from the structure.
Local residents and business owners praised the prompt response of emergency teams but expressed concern over recurring fire incidents in Srinagar’s commercial zones, which often lack adequate fire safety measures. “This is the second major fire we have seen in this area in recent months. Many buildings here have outdated wiring systems and limited fire exits. Authorities need to conduct strict safety audits,” said a shopkeeper who witnessed the incident.
Officials said that while the immediate danger has been contained, residual smoke and debris continue to pose minor risks, and cooling operations are underway. “Our teams will remain stationed at the site overnight to ensure there are no flare-ups,” the fire officer added.
