18-05-2023 : In a significant development, Arjun Ram Meghwal has been appointed as the new Union Law and Justice Minister, replacing Kiren Rijiju, in a cabinet reshuffle. The announcement was made by the President’s Secretariat on Thursday. Meghwal will not only take charge of the Law and Justice Ministry but also assume the existing portfolios of Rijiju. Meanwhile, Kiren Rijiju has been assigned the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
The decision to reallocate portfolios among the ministers in the Union Council of Ministers was made by the President of India, based on the advice of the Prime Minister. The official communique stated, “The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has been pleased to direct the following reallocation of portfolios among Ministers in the Union Council of Ministers, the portfolio of Ministry of Earth Sciences be assigned to Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State be assigned the independent charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice in addition to his existing portfolios, in place of Shri Kiren Rijiju.”
Kiren Rijiju had assumed the role of the Law and Justice Minister on July 8, 2021. Prior to that, he had served as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Youth Affairs and Sports from May 2019 to July 2021.
