Mamata Reins In Abhishek as TMC Faces Growing MP Exodus

Party chief strengthens organisational control and expands leadership structure as reports of dissatisfaction among several MPs trigger political buzz ahead of key INDIA bloc meeting.

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has initiated a major organisational overhaul following growing speculation about discontent within its parliamentary ranks, prompting party supremo Mamata Banerjee to tighten her grip on the organisation ahead of crucial political engagements in New Delhi.

The developments gained momentum after reports emerged that several TMC Lok Sabha MPs had travelled to the national capital, fuelling discussions about possible divisions within the party. While no leader has publicly confirmed any move towards a split, the unusual political activity has triggered intense debate within West Bengal’s political circles.

In response, Mamata Banerjee convened a National Working Committee meeting at her Kolkata residence, where significant changes were announced in the party’s national structure. Senior leaders Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen were appointed as joint national secretaries, broadening the leadership framework and distributing key responsibilities among experienced parliamentarians.

The reorganisation is being viewed as an effort to strengthen coordination between the party’s parliamentary and organisational wings at a time when internal challenges have become increasingly visible. The leadership changes also come just days before the INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi, where Mamata Banerjee is expected to participate along with senior TMC representatives.

Sources within the party indicated that concerns had been raised by some MPs regarding communication and decision-making processes. The leadership has moved swiftly to address these issues by expanding consultation mechanisms and reinforcing organisational unity.

Among the MPs whose names surfaced during the political speculation, some have either denied involvement in any factional activity or maintained that they remain committed to the party’s leadership. Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar publicly rejected allegations that she was encouraging divisions within the parliamentary party, stating that she continues to remain in Kolkata and has not participated in any such exercise.

Several senior leaders have also rallied behind Mamata Banerjee, emphasizing the need for unity. Veteran parliamentarians and party office-bearers have stressed that Trinamool Congress remains focused on strengthening its organisational base and preparing for future political battles.

The issue has attracted attention from opposition parties as well. Political observers note that allegations of attempts to influence elected representatives have become a recurring feature of contemporary Indian politics, particularly in states where governments and major opposition parties face intense competition.

Meanwhile, TMC leaders have sought to project confidence, arguing that the party remains united under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. They contend that organisational restructuring is part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency, enhance coordination, and prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.

The coming days are expected to be crucial for the ruling West Bengal party as senior leaders gather in Delhi for opposition meetings and efforts continue to consolidate support within both the parliamentary and organisational wings. Political analysts believe the effectiveness of the recent leadership reshuffle will become clearer once the party navigates the current phase of internal uncertainty and emerges with a stronger collective strategy.

For now, the TMC leadership appears focused on damage control, organisational consolidation, and ensuring that speculation surrounding internal divisions does not overshadow its larger political agenda at the national level.
