Meghwal Calls for Curbing Habit of Appealing Against Court Orders

Minister highlights need to curb tendency of government departments to challenge sound court judgments.

New Delhi, Sep 20: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Saturday emphasised the importance of curbing the tendency among government departments to file appeals against court orders. Speaking at a conference of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) here, he noted that departments often pursue appeals even when courts have delivered sound and justified judgments.

Meghwal highlighted that officers sometimes file appeals to protect themselves when their decisions are questioned by judicial authorities. “I regularly receive files where central departments are planning to challenge court or CAT orders, despite the judgments being legally sound,” he said.

He also urged the CAT to leverage modern technology, including e-filing and virtual hearings, to ensure that geographical constraints do not hinder the delivery of justice. The minister appreciated the tribunal’s role in easing the case load of the Supreme Court and high courts, noting its contribution to faster and more efficient justice.
