Mehraj Malik Warns of Shrinking Political Space, Calls on Youth to Drive Change

AAP MLA vows to continue public welfare struggle after release, urges unity beyond religion and active political participation

JAMMU, Apr 28: Mehraj Malik, a legislator from the Aam Aadmi Party, on Tuesday said that political space shrinking is becoming a serious concern, even as he called upon young people to actively participate in politics to bring meaningful change.

Speaking to reporters after his release from Kathua Jail, Malik criticised the growing trend of legal cases being intertwined with political activity but maintained that genuine transformation is only possible through democratic engagement.

Release After High Court Relief

Malik’s release followed a significant legal development after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court quashed his detention under the Public Safety Act. The decision brought an end to his eight-month incarceration, during which he claimed to have been targeted for raising public issues.

He described his imprisonment as part of a larger struggle for people’s rights, asserting that his resolve remains intact despite the challenges faced.

Struggle Rooted in Thought, Not Politics

Emphasising his ideological commitment, Malik said his efforts are driven by principles rather than conventional political motives.

“Our struggle will continue unchanged. It is not merely political but based on ideas and the welfare of the people,” he stated.

He reiterated that his actions have always been focused on highlighting public concerns and advocating for reforms aimed at improving governance and social conditions.

Call for Youth Participation in Politics

Highlighting the importance of youth engagement, Malik urged young individuals to step into public life, stating that their involvement is essential to reshape the future.

“I stand alone today, but I want the youth to join. Only active participation in politics can change the destiny of the people and the nation,” he said.

He further appealed to educated and capable citizens to contribute meaningfully, stressing that societal progress depends on collective involvement rather than passive observation.

Appeal for Unity Beyond Religious Divides

Malik also emphasised the need to rise above religious identities, calling for a focus on humanity as the foundation of governance.

“Every religion teaches service to humanity. People must move away from religion-based politics and work for the greater good,” he said.

He added that governance should be evaluated on performance and integrity rather than religious affiliation, noting that individuals are ultimately judged by their actions and character.

Criticism of System and Legal Pressures

Addressing his legal troubles, Malik alleged that cases were used as tools to obstruct his reform-oriented efforts.

“We did not enter politics to fight legal battles, but to bring improvement. However, such entanglements have become part of the system,” he remarked.

He suggested that such practices contribute to the perception that political space shrinking is limiting open expression and discouraging dissent.

Focus on Governance and Public Issues

The MLA pointed out that despite various initiatives, key issues such as unemployment continue to affect the youth more deeply than other concerns.

While acknowledging campaigns like anti-drug initiatives, he stressed that lack of employment opportunities remains the core challenge requiring urgent attention.

Malik also questioned the effectiveness of policymaking, arguing that a lack of clear vision among decision-makers hampers progress.

“If those responsible for policies lack direction, how will society move forward?” he asked.

No Personal Grudges, Emphasis on Empathy

Clarifying his stance towards government officials, Malik said he harbours no personal resentment and called for a more empathetic approach in governance.

He urged authorities to act in the best interest of the public, highlighting the importance of accountability and responsiveness in administrative systems.

Reflection on Imprisonment and Ongoing Resolve

Reflecting on his time in custody, Malik expressed regret over the difficulties faced by his supporters but described struggle as an inevitable part of change.

“You can imprison a person, but not his thoughts. This is a fight for humanity and justice,” he asserted.

He maintained that the truth will eventually prevail, expressing confidence in democratic processes to determine right and wrong.

Future Plans and Continued Engagement

Looking ahead, Malik said he plans to resume public outreach after consulting with his team, indicating a structured approach to reconnecting with people across the region.

He urged patience among supporters and assured that his efforts will continue with renewed focus.

“There is no need for haste. We will plan carefully and engage with people across Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Political Engagement Key to Change

Reiterating his central message, Malik stressed that political participation remains the only viable path to meaningful reform.

“Politics runs the world, and real change can only come through active involvement in it,” he said.

His remarks underline growing concerns about political space shrinking, while also reinforcing the importance of democratic engagement as a tool for transformation.
