Military Personnel Mark International Yoga Day with Enthusiastic Participation Nationwide

Thousands of military personnel, families and cadets join wellness initiatives as Army, Navy and Air Force promote fitness, resilience and holistic health

NEW DELHI, June 21: The Indian Armed Forces celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga with large-scale participation across the country on Saturday, bringing together military personnel, families, cadets and civilians in a nationwide display of commitment to health, discipline and mental well being.

From the snow covered Himalayan regions to coastal installations and major military bases, personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force participated in yoga sessions organised under this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The observance highlighted the growing role of yoga in enhancing physical fitness, mental strength and overall wellness among service members.

One of the major events was held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment, where thousands gathered in the early morning hours to perform various yoga postures and breathing exercises. Participants included Army personnel, their family members, National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, school students and members of the diplomatic community associated with defence establishments.

Military officials said the event reflected the armed forces’ continued emphasis on maintaining operational readiness through a balanced approach to physical and mental health. The large gathering demonstrated how yoga has become an integral part of daily fitness routines within the defence services.

Across the country, yoga sessions were conducted at formations under the Northern, Western, Eastern, Southern, Central and South Western Commands. Several units had also organised awareness programmes and practice sessions in the days leading up to International Yoga Day, encouraging personnel to adopt yoga as a regular lifestyle practice.

The Army highlighted the importance of yoga in strengthening concentration, improving endurance and fostering emotional stability. Senior officers noted that the discipline helps personnel remain focused and resilient in challenging operational environments, whether deployed in high-altitude regions, deserts, forests or urban settings.

Military formations shared messages emphasising that yoga contributes to both individual wellness and collective strength. According to officials, the practice promotes harmony between physical capability and mental clarity, qualities considered essential for personnel entrusted with national security responsibilities.

The Army’s Central Command, headquartered in Lucknow, had earlier described yoga as a powerful tool for building endurance, self-discipline and inner balance. It also highlighted the participation of troops stationed across geographically diverse regions, from Himalayan sectors to the plains of northern and central India.

The Indian Air Force marked the occasion with synchronised yoga sessions conducted across its operational commands. Events were organised at various strategic locations covering the country’s northern, southern, eastern and western regions.

Air Force personnel performed yoga exercises at stations situated in challenging terrains, including high-altitude locations and remote forward areas. Officials stated that the initiative reflects the force’s commitment to maintaining both physical preparedness and mental agility among air warriors.

The observance stretched from the mountainous landscapes of Leh to the coastal region of Car Nicobar, while personnel stationed in Tawang and Dwarka also joined the nationwide programme. The widespread participation showcased the extensive reach of the celebrations and underscored the importance attached to wellness practices within the force.

The Indian Navy also organised yoga sessions at naval establishments and onboard ships, reinforcing its focus on health and operational effectiveness. Naval personnel participated in guided exercises aimed at enhancing flexibility, concentration and endurance.

For the Navy, this year’s observance coincided with a significant milestone as three indigenous frontline warships, including the stealth frigate Dunagiri, were scheduled to be commissioned in Kolkata. Despite operational commitments, sailors and officers took part in wellness activities as part of the nationwide celebration.

Defence officials noted that yoga plays a valuable role in helping military personnel manage demanding schedules and stressful situations. Regular practice contributes to improved physical conditioning, better breathing control and enhanced mental resilience, all of which are essential attributes in military service.

This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focused on encouraging people of all age groups to embrace healthy lifestyles through consistent physical activity and mindfulness. Armed forces representatives said the message aligns closely with the military’s emphasis on long-term fitness and preventive healthcare.

Experts associated with defence wellness programmes believe yoga complements conventional training methods by improving mobility, posture, recovery and emotional well-being. As a result, it has become a regular feature in many military fitness schedules across the country.

The nationwide participation by the Army, Navy and Air Force also highlighted India’s efforts to promote yoga as a globally recognised practice rooted in the country’s cultural heritage. Military leaders described yoga as a timeless discipline that continues to offer practical benefits in modern life.

As thousands of personnel gathered at military stations, parade grounds, naval bases and air force establishments, the celebrations reflected a shared commitment to building a healthier and more resilient force. Officials said the initiative serves not only as a fitness activity but also as a reminder of the importance of balance, focus and inner strength in both professional and personal life.

The observance concluded with participants reaffirming the value of yoga in promoting physical vitality, mental wellness and overall quality of life. Defence authorities expressed confidence that continued engagement with such practices would contribute to a stronger, healthier and more prepared military community in the years ahead.
