Minimum Temperatures Rise Across Kashmir, Srinagar at 2.8°C

Post-Chillai Kalan trend continues as minimum temperatures rise across the Valley, though Gulmarg remains the coldest at -5.3°C

Srinagar, Feb 3: Minimum temperatures across Kashmir showed a noticeable uptick on Tuesday, with Srinagar registering 2.8 degrees Celsius — over three degrees higher than the seasonal norm, according to officials.

The steady warming trend has been observed since the end of Chillai Kalan, the Valley’s most severe 40-day winter period, indicating a gradual shift toward milder nights.

Gulmarg in Baramulla district continued to be the coldest location in Jammu and Kashmir, recording a low of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius. However, this was still nearly two degrees above the typical average of minus 7.4 degrees for this time of year.

Pahalgam, the south Kashmir tourist destination that also serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, experienced a sharp increase in night temperature. The mercury rose by more than four degrees to settle at minus 0.4 degrees Celsius.

Other parts of the Valley reported relatively higher minimum readings as well. Qazigund recorded 0.4 degrees Celsius, Kokernag touched the freezing point at zero degrees, and Kupwara logged minus 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Chillai Khurd — a 20-day spell known for comparatively moderate cold — commenced on Saturday after the conclusion of Chillai Kalan. It will be followed by Chillai Bachha, the final 10-day phase that traditionally marks the tapering end of winter in the region.
