Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Issues Directive for Premature Retirement of Basant Rath, IPS Officer

09-08-2023 : The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued an order today, mandating the premature retirement of IPS officer Basant Rath. This decision comes as a result of a careful assessment of the situation and has been executed under the framework of Rule 16(3) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement-Benefits) Rules, 1958. The retirement takes immediate effect and is accompanied by a provision of three months’ pay and allowances in lieu of notice.

In a formal letter dispatched to the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, the MHA conveyed that the Competent Authority, following a comprehensive evaluation, has sanctioned the early retirement of Basant Rath. This move is rooted in the best interests of the public and the administrative machinery. Rath, an IPS officer, belonged to the 2000 batch of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre, which has now transformed into AGMUT. He held the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The communication from the MHA elucidates, The Central Government, having meticulously deliberated upon the proposal presented by the Union Territory division and having taken into account Rath’s performance, has reached the determination that his continuation in service is not aligned with the broader interests of the public. As a consequence, the Government has made the well-considered decision to prematurely retire Basant Rath from active service, upholding the paramount interests of the public.
