Modi Concludes Three Day Visit to South Africa

PM highlights AI safeguards, UNSC reform at G20 and IBSA meetings

New Delhi, Nov 24 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on Monday after completing a three day visit to South Africa where he participated in the G20 Leaders Summit and the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) leaders’ meeting.

During the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Modi urged world leaders to adopt a global compact to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence, stressing that critical technologies must remain human-centric rather than finance-centric.

At the IBSA meeting, the Prime Minister strongly advocated for long-pending reforms of the UN Security Council, asserting that restructuring global governance institutions was “not an option but a necessity.” He said the IBSA troika must send a united message on accelerating these changes.

In a post on X, Modi said, “The successful Johannesburg G20 will contribute to a prosperous and sustainable planet. My meetings and interactions with world leaders were very fruitful and will deepen India’s bilateral linkages with various nations.” He also thanked the people of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa, and the South African government for hosting the summit.

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi held bilateral meetings with several global leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
