Third consecutive term reflects House’s trust; Opposition raises concerns over Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker vacancy

NEW DELHI, Apr 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Harivansh after he was elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a third consecutive term, underscoring broad confidence in his leadership within the Upper House.

Addressing members, Modi described the re-election as a strong endorsement of Harivansh’s impartial conduct and ability to guide proceedings with balance and discipline. He noted that securing the position for the third time consecutively is a rare distinction, reflecting sustained trust among parliamentarians.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the House has consistently benefited from Harivansh’s experience and inclusive approach. He praised his administrative style, calling it intuitive and rooted in consensus-building, which has helped maintain decorum during debates.

Referring to his earlier career, Modi also acknowledged Harivansh’s contributions to journalism, stating that he upheld high professional standards during his time in the field. He further commended his decision to utilize Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds for academic and research initiatives across universities, calling it a forward-looking step toward nation building.

Modi added that Harivansh has played a meaningful role in inspiring young citizens, particularly by promoting confidence in achieving the vision of a developed India through knowledge and innovation.

Meanwhile, Congress President and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also extended his congratulations, expressing hope that the Chair would ensure fair opportunities for all voices in the House. Kharge emphasized the importance of allowing sufficient time for the opposition to participate in discussions.

However, he raised concern over the prolonged vacancy of the Deputy Speaker’s post in the Lok Sabha, noting that it has remained unfilled since 2019. He described the situation as inconsistent with constitutional principles and urged the government to address the issue.
