Modi–Trump Meeting on the Cards? US Envoy Sergio Gor Says ‘Stay Tuned’

Speculation around a possible Modi Trump meeting has resurfaced after US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor hinted that an interaction between the two leaders could be on the horizon.

India, Feb 20 : It has been over a year since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump last met. Despite several diplomatic opportunities, a face to face interaction has not materialised. The past year has also seen turbulence in bilateral ties, especially after Washington imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods, straining relations before an interim trade agreement helped stabilise the partnership.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Gor responded cautiously when asked about a potential meeting between the two leaders. “Stay tuned, I am sure it will happen at the right moment,” he said.

The ambassador described the summit as “very impactful” and emphasised the wide ranging opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. “We have a lot of opportunities between our two nations. We look forward to engaging with that,” he added.

Notably, the phrase “stay tuned” was earlier used by Gor on X following a phone conversation between Modi and Trump on February 2. Shortly after that call, Trump announced on Truth Social that a trade understanding had been reached, under which US tariffs on Indian imports would be reduced from 50 per cent to 18 per cent.

On the possibility of a presidential visit to India, Gor confirmed that an invitation has been extended by Modi but said no dates have been finalised. He recalled Trump’s appreciation for India’s culture and vibrancy, suggesting that a return visit could take place in the future, though no formal announcement has been made yet.
