Monsoon Intensifies Across North India, IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert in Multiple States
Flood risk rises as rainfall activity strengthens over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand
India, June 09 : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for intensified monsoon activity across several northern states during June , 2026, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand.
According to weather officials, the monsoon system has advanced faster than expected this year, bringing widespread precipitation and raising concerns over flash floods and landslides in hilly regions. Authorities in vulnerable districts have been instructed to maintain round the clock monitoring and ensure emergency response teams are on standby.
In Jammu & Kashmir, intermittent rainfall has already triggered waterlogging in low-lying areas, while river levels in some tributaries are being closely observed. Disaster management teams have been directed to remain alert, especially in mountainous zones prone to landslides.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk regions and warned farmers to take precautions to protect standing crops. Transport disruptions, particularly on highways connecting hill districts, are also expected if rainfall intensity increases further.
Officials said the current weather pattern is influenced by active monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea, which are likely to persist over the coming days.
