Jammu, 02-08-2024 : Anil Goswami, former Union Home Secretary of India and Ashwani Sharma, former MLA, jointly flagged off a team of Mountaineering Association of J&K for Mountaineering expedition to U T Kangri peak (6070m) in Ladakh from Press Club of Jammu, here.
The small 5-member team shall be led by a senior mountaineer Sumit Khajuria includes Sonam Sidharth, Shashi Kant Sharma, Sourav Deep Singh and Mallikarun Singh. While Sumit Khajuria is a highly trained and experienced mountaineer Shashi Kant is a physically and mentally tough and disciplined mountaineer, having scaled Matho Kangri and Kang Yissey peaks in earlier expeditions organized by the Association. Sonam Sidharth, Sourav Deep Singh and Mallikarjun Singh are also trained mountaineers who have been very active in adventure activities after completing their Mountaineering Courses.
UT Kangri is a newly explored elegant snow capped 6070 m high peak in the upper valley of Rumtse village, 75 kms away from leh town. With a base camp at 5320m the route to its summit is challenging with 10 to 11 hours of tiring climb. However, the top offers a stunning view of different ranges of mountains and peaks like Markha valley and the eastern Karakoram ranges. The team is hopeful to place all the members on the peak within a span of about 12 days.
It may be mentioned here that in 2023 a team of Mountaineering Association of J&K had successfully scaled Kang Yatse peak and in 2022 had summitted Yunam peak, both 20000ft peaks.
Shawetica Khajuria, General Secretary welcomed the team and the guests on the occasion and introduced them to the Chief Guest. Ram Khajuria, the Senior President of the Association gave a brief account of the activities undertaken by the Association since its inception and thanked the J&K State Sports Council for patronage of some of the activities of the Association especially the sponsorship of this mountaineering expeditions.
Speaking on the occasion the Chief Guest Anil Goswami appreciated the efforts of the Association for undertaking a challenging expedition to U T Kangri. He wished the mountaineers a safe and successful . Ashwani Sharma, former MLA, and patron of Tawi Trekkers J&K advised the mountaineers to prepare themselves fully, physically as well as mentally, for Tawi Trekkers J&K’S ambitious adventure programmes, planned for this year.
Besides the team members, prominent among others present on the occasion included Prof. Lalit Magotra, President Dogri Sanstha, Jammu; Abdul Mohsin, General Secretary, District Association, Pulwama; Rakesh Goswami, President District Mountaineering Association, Jammu, international sport climber and mountaineer Shivani Charak; Mridhu Padha, Vice President along with Sunil Chakharia, Prerna Charak, Seema Kharyal, Ananjan Raghav, Vikas Singh and Aditya Padha of Tawi Trekkers J&K; Sushil Singh Treasurer and Navneet Gupta,an executive members of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Jammu.
All the members present on the occasion wished the team a safe and successful expedition.
