“Mumbai Indians Look Stronger on Paper”: Mohammad Kaif Backs Mumbai Indians Over Chennai Super Kings Ahead of IPL Showdown

Kaif Highlights Mumbai’s Squad Depth Before Chepauk Clash

India, May 02 : Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes Mumbai Indians possess a stronger overall squad than Chennai Super Kings ahead of their blockbuster Indian Premier League 2026 encounter at the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on May 2.
The much anticipated rivalry clash, often referred to as the IPL’s “El Clásico,” arrives at a critical stage of the tournament, with both five time champions fighting to stay alive in the playoff race. Chennai currently occupy sixth place in the points table with six points, while Mumbai sit near the bottom in ninth position after managing only four points from eight matches.
Despite Mumbai’s disappointing campaign so far, Kaif backed the franchise due to the presence of experienced match-winners capable of turning games around under pressure.
Speaking during a discussion on Star Sports, Kaif said Mumbai’s squad appears more balanced and dangerous on paper, although inconsistency has prevented them from delivering strong performances regularly this season.
According to Kaif, Mumbai’s strength lies in the depth of their batting and the presence of players who can dominate matches single-handedly. He added that if the side manages to execute its plans effectively on a given day, it becomes extremely difficult for opponents to contain them.
At the same time, the former batter expressed concerns over Chennai’s overdependence on captain Sanju Samson. Kaif suggested that CSK have relied heavily on Samson’s batting contributions throughout the season, and such dependence could become a vulnerability in high-pressure matches.
The previous meeting between the two teams earlier in IPL 2026 heavily favored Chennai. CSK produced a commanding performance to crush Mumbai by 103 runs in one of the most one-sided editions of the famous rivalry.
Sanju Samson played a sensational unbeaten knock of 101 runs, guiding Chennai to a massive total of 208. Mumbai’s batting lineup then collapsed dramatically under scoreboard pressure as the CSK bowlers dominated proceedings.
Spinner Akeal Hosein starred with remarkable figures of 4 wickets for 17 runs, dismantling Mumbai’s middle order. He received excellent support from Noor Ahmad, Mukesh Choudhary, Jamie Overton, Anshul Kamboj and Gurjapneet Singh, all of whom chipped in with crucial wickets as MI were bundled out for just 104.
Tonight’s contest at Chepauk is expected to be another intense battle between two of the league’s most successful franchises. A victory could revive the playoff hopes of either side, while another defeat may push them closer to elimination.
With pressure mounting and expectations soaring, all eyes will once again be on the historic rivalry between Mumbai and Chennai as the IPL season enters a decisive phase.
