Mumbai Police Direct Actor Imran Khan to Leave India by October 28
The American citizen was served a notice following his participation in an October 10 protest in Mumbai, police said.
Mumbai, October 15: Mumbai Police have issued a notice to Bollywood actor Imran Khan, an American citizen, directing him to leave India by October 28 over alleged violations of provisions under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, officials said on Thursday.
The action follows the actor’s participation in a demonstration held in Mumbai on October 10, during which protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a police official said.
Imran Khan, who is the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, was briefly taken into custody by police during the protest.
According to a police official, the actor holds American citizenship and is not an Indian national. The official said the authorities were examining the matter under provisions applicable to foreign nationals participating in political demonstrations or activities in India.
Police confirmed that a formal notice requiring the actor to leave the country by October 28 had been served on him. He has also received a copy of the notice, officials said, adding that further administrative procedures were underway.
The development follows a complaint by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirit Somaiya, who had urged Mumbai Police to take action against the actor for participating in a protest despite holding foreign citizenship.
Somaiya had also sought clarification from the authorities on whether a foreign national could take part in such demonstrations on Indian soil.
The protest on October 10 was organised in support of the Cockroach Janta Party, with demonstrators calling for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner.
The police action has brought attention to the rules governing the activities of foreign nationals in India, particularly their participation in political gatherings and public demonstrations.
Authorities have not announced any further action beyond the notice and the ongoing administrative process. The matter remains under consideration by the concerned officials.
