National Protest Against Mass Suspension of MPs: INDIA Bloc Mobilizes at Jantar Mantar with Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge
New Delhi, 22-12-2023: The INDIA bloc is gearing up for a widespread protest against the mass suspension of opposition MPs from Parliament, with a significant event planned at Jantar Mantar. Scheduled for Friday, the protest will feature Congress leader Rahul Gandhi delivering a speech at 11 am, with Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge also in attendance.
Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely announced the participation of INDIA alliance partners in the protest at Jantar Mantar, including AAP MPs N D Gupta, Sandeep Patak, Sant Balbir Seecehwal, and Sanjeev Arora. Simultaneously, leaders from RJD, JDU, and Congress will unite for a joint protest in Patna. Additionally, a nationwide protest is set to take place at all district headquarters. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is expected to join the protest at Jantar Mantar.
Tharoor emphasized the necessity of such protests, indicating a nationwide movement to highlight the consequences when Parliament stifles opposition voices and neglects democratic principles. On the preceding day, INDIA bloc MPs marched from Parliament to Vijay Chowk, displaying banners and placards with messages such as ‘Save Democracy,’ ‘Opposition MPs Suspended,’ ‘Parliament Caged,’ and ‘Democracy Expelled.’ Mallikarjun Kharge accused the suspensions of being part of a larger conspiracy to transform Parliament into a platform for the ruling party. He criticized the BJP for allegedly strangulating democracy by passing key bills without adequate discussion or debate.
Kharge expressed concern about constitutional positions failing to protect opposition MPs, instead engaging in partisan politics based on caste, region, and occupation. This criticism was aimed at the Lok Sabha speaker and the Rajya Sabha chairman, whom Kharge accused of not fulfilling their constitutional obligations, prompting nationwide scrutiny.
