Nationwide Curfew Declared in Nepal to Prevent Possible Violence

Measures aim to prevent violence and protect property following mass unrest and Prime Minister Oli’s resignation.

Kathmandu, Sep 10: The Nepal Army on Wednesday enforced nationwide restrictive orders from morning until 5 pm, followed by a curfew until 6 am the next day, to curb potential violence linked to ongoing protests.

In a statement, the Army warned that any demonstrations, vandalism, arson, or attacks targeting individuals or property during this period would be treated as criminal offenses and dealt with strictly. The restrictive orders and curfew are in effect throughout the country.

Authorities cited the need to prevent incidents of looting, arson, and other destructive activities disguised as protests. “There are also possible threats of rape and violent attacks against individuals,” the statement added.

Essential services including ambulances, fire engines, health workers, and security personnel are exempted and allowed to operate during the curfew.

The security measures follow mass protests triggered by the death of at least 19 people in police action during demonstrations by Gen Z over corruption and a government imposed social media ban, which was lifted Monday night.

Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday after protesters entered his office demanding accountability. Despite his resignation, unrest continued, with demonstrators setting fire to the Parliament, the President’s Office, the Prime Minister’s residence, government buildings, political party offices, and homes of senior leaders.
