NEET-UG Set for Major Digital Shift as Computer-Based Exam Model Gains Momentum
Authorities Push Technology-Driven Testing Reforms Following Examination Security Concerns
New Delhi, June 1: India’s medical entrance examination system is preparing for a major transformation as policymakers move ahead with plans to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) in a computer-based format from 2027 onward.
The proposal has gained momentum following concerns regarding examination security and repeated demands for a more transparent assessment mechanism. Officials believe that shifting to a digital examination platform could significantly reduce the possibility of paper leaks, malpractice, and logistical challenges associated with conducting one of the world’s largest entrance examinations.
The move comes amid growing debates about examination reforms after several controversies surrounding competitive tests in recent years. Education experts argue that adopting a technology-based system can improve monitoring, strengthen security infrastructure, and streamline result processing.
Under the proposed model, candidates may appear for the examination at designated computer-based testing centres equipped with secure systems and surveillance mechanisms. Authorities are also examining ways to ensure fairness through improved question bank management and examination scheduling.
The transition, however, presents significant challenges. With more than 20 lakh students appearing for NEET every year, experts have pointed out the need for large-scale infrastructure expansion, especially in rural and semi-urban regions. Adequate computer facilities, reliable internet connectivity, and trained personnel will be critical for successful implementation.
Educational institutions have welcomed the discussion on modernization while urging policymakers to maintain transparency during the transition period. Student groups have also demanded extensive mock examinations and awareness campaigns to help aspirants adapt to the new format.
Experts believe that digital testing aligns with global assessment trends and could become a milestone reform in India’s higher education admission system. The coming months are expected to witness further consultations among educational authorities, technical experts, and examination agencies before the final framework is announced.
The proposed shift reflects the government’s broader push toward digital governance and technology-driven educational reforms designed to strengthen the credibility of national entrance examinations.
