Netherlands Firm to Build New Blast Furnace at IISCO Steel Plant

Massive 4.3 MTPA greenfield unit to mark major technological upgrade for SAIL plant

India, Dec 07 : A significant industrial development unfolded quietly on the day political attention in West Bengal was fixed on a mosque foundation ceremony in Murshidabad. The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has finalised a major ₹1,200-crore investment for a new blast furnace at its IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) in Burnpur, West Burdwan — the state’s industrial heartland.

IISCO Steel Plant has signed a contract with a consortium of Danieli Corus India Pvt. Ltd. and Danieli Corus B.V., Netherlands to establish a greenfield blast furnace with a hot metal production capacity of 4.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The project forms part of ISP’s 4.08 MTPA Crude Steel Expansion Project.

The upcoming blast furnace will have a useful volume of 5,557 m³, placing it among the most advanced and high-tech furnaces in India. It will be equipped with cutting-edge systems, including a top-fired hot blast stove, dry gas cleaning plant (Dry GCP), top pressure recovery turbine (TRT), slag granulation plant, pump house, stock house, cast house and integrated dedusting units.

Notably, SAIL will deploy a top fired hot blast stove and Dry GCP for the first time in any of its plants, marking a major leap forward in energy efficiency, environmental performance and technology adoption.

Expressing the workforce’s commitment, Sushil Kumar Suman, president of the IISCO Officers’ Association, said: “We will work day and night to fulfil every responsibility entrusted to us by the top management.”

SAIL has already announced a comprehensive ₹35,000-crore expansion and modernisation plan for the IISCO Steel Plant — the largest-ever central investment in West Bengal. ISP Burnpur currently houses India’s largest operational blast furnace, ‘Kalyani’.
