Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Move Paves Way for Bihar’s First BJP-Led Government

Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Bid Clears Path for BJP to Form State Government

PATNA, Mar 5: The political landscape in Bihar is poised for a historic shift as JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar’s “wish to become a Rajya Sabha member” has opened the door for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to establish its first government in the state. The BJP, which emerged as the single largest party with 89 assembly seats in the recent polls, is set to install a chief minister of its own, marking a significant departure from Bihar’s traditional Mandal era politics.

The swearing-in ceremony highlighted the BJP’s dominance, with the party securing key portfolios including Home, and attracted prominent leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several state chief ministers. RJD national working president Tejashwi Yadav criticized the move, saying, “The BJP has done a Maharashtra in Bihar… It will now seek to implement its agenda in the socialist stronghold.”

Caste Dynamics and Chief Minister Speculations

Speculation is rife over who will become Bihar’s next chief minister. Samrat Choudhary, currently Deputy CM and Home Minister, is a Koeri OBC and a front-runner, having received backing from Amit Shah during the assembly elections. Another contender is Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, a Yadav and veteran of the Sangh Parivar, whose appointment could affect caste balance in the state.

BJP insiders indicate that the party may opt for a less prominent leader, as seen in states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Odisha, while leaving open the possibility of an upper caste CM if deemed meritorious. The party’s strategy appears to balance meritocracy with Bihar’s complex social dynamics, reflecting lessons from Mandal era caste politics.

JD(U) Influence Diminishes

With Nitish Kumar stepping aside for the Rajya Sabha, JD(U)’s clout is expected to wane. Reports suggest that even Nitish’s recently announced son, Nishant Kumar, may be accommodated as Deputy CM, but his political survival will largely depend on the BJP’s support. A JD(U) leader remarked, “Things are never going to be the same again for us… All ministers, even ‘saheb’s’ son, shall now depend on BJP goodwill.”

The transition signals a major political realignment in Bihar, with the BJP poised to consolidate power and reshape governance in India’s only Hindi heartland state where it has yet to form a government.
