NMC Releases 2026-27 MBBS Seat Matrix With Over 1.40 Lakh Seats

NEW DELHI, Sept 28: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, listing 1,40,664 approved undergraduate medical seats across 839 medical colleges in the country.

The latest figures provide candidates participating in the NEET UG 2026 admission process with an updated picture of the number of MBBS seats available across government and private medical institutions. The matrix does not include seats in Institutes of National Importance.

The regulator has also cautioned medical colleges against admitting students beyond their sanctioned intake. Institutions have been advised to carefully verify the approved number of seats before completing admissions and to report any discrepancies in the published matrix to the NMC.

The release of the seat matrix comes as the medical admission process for the 2026-27 academic year moves through different stages of counselling. Candidates seeking admission to undergraduate medical programmes are required to participate in counselling conducted through the designated authorities according to the applicable quota and admission rules.

The number of approved MBBS seats is an important component of the admission process because it determines the intake that medical colleges are authorised to offer. The seat matrix is also used by counselling authorities while preparing seat-allocation options for eligible candidates.
