No More Silence: A Call to Action on Women’s Safety

With its girls and women, India is at war. As horrifying reports of brutality and nightmare killings, rapes, acid attacks, domestic violence, and other crimes are reported every day. But in the past month, three tragedies have again shocked and frightened the country. Anjali Singh, age 20, is killed after a car strikes her scooter, dragging her for more than 7 kilometres before dropping her body on the road.

Women’s safety has been a pressing issue in India for many years. Despite various laws and policies being put in place to protect women, incidents of violence and harassment against them continue to occur on a daily basis. This is a matter of grave concern as it not only affects the safety and well-being of women but also has a negative impact on the overall development of the country. One of the major factors contributing to the poor state of women’s safety in India is the deeply entrenched patriarchy that exists in society. This has led to a culture of misogyny and gender discrimination, where women are often seen as inferior to men and are denied equal opportunities. This has also resulted in a widespread belief that it is acceptable for men to use violence or coercion to assert their dominance over women. Another factor that contributes to the lack of safety for women in India is the inadequate implementation of laws and policies. While there are various laws and policies in place to protect women, such as the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, they are often not effectively implemented or enforced. This results in a lack of deterrence for perpetrators of violence against women, leading to a high rate of such incidents. There are also other issues that contribute to the poor state of women’s safety in India. For instance, there is a lack of awareness among women about their rights and how to seek help in case of abuse. There is also a lack of support from the police and other authorities, who are often unwilling to register cases or provide assistance to victims of violence.

To address the issue of women’s safety in India, it is necessary to adopt a multi-pronged approach that focuses on both legal and societal reforms. Some measure that can be taken to improve the situation is to strengthen the implementation of laws and policies. It is essential to ensure that laws and policies aimed at protecting women are effectively implemented and enforced. This can be achieved by setting up dedicated courts and police units to handle cases of violence against women and providing adequate training to law enforcement personnel to handle such cases sensitively. Create awareness about women’s rights and how to seek help in case of abuse. This can be done through education campaigns, media campaigns, and by providing access to information and resources. Provide support and assistance to victims of violence, including medical care, counseling, and legal assistance. This can be done through the establishment of shelters and helplines, and by providing access to legal representation.

Local governments can also conduct regular safety audits to identify areas where women may be at risk of violence or harassment and take steps to address these issues. This can include installing street lighting, improving public transportation, and increasing the presence of law enforcement in areas that are known to be unsafe. Local governments can work with community organizations and local leaders to develop and implement strategies to improve women’s safety. This can also include organizing awareness campaigns, providing training on women’s rights and self-defense, and setting up support groups for victims of violence. Local governments can invest in initiatives that are led by women, such as women-led businesses and organizations that work to promote women’s safety and empowerment.

Finally, the issue of women’s safety in India is a complex and multifaceted problem that requires a comprehensive and concerted effort to address. By adopting a multi-pronged approach that focuses on legal and societal reforms, it is possible to create a safer and more equal society for women in India.
