No Sanskrit Teacher Posts in J&K Schools: Scholars Say Cultural Heritage at Risk

J&K Sanskrit Scholars Allege Conspiracy Over Absence of Teacher Vacancies, Warn of Protests

Jammu, Nov 13: Raising concerns about what they claim to be systematic neglect of Sanskrit, a group of scholars today alleged that recruitment efforts for higher secondary schools in Jammu and Kashmir lack even a single vacancy for Sanskrit teachers. Addressing the media, they called on the Education Minister to address this oversight and ensure that Sanskrit scholars and students have access to dedicated teaching posts within the state’s education system.

Veena Sharma, a PhD scholar in Sanskrit, emphasized that this neglect was not an isolated incident, pointing to repeated instances where the Sanskrit curriculum and teacher recruitment have been sidelined. “This is not the first time Sanskrit has been left out,” she asserted, citing previous issues with both course offerings and faculty recruitment. According to Sharma, the lack of Sanskrit courses at the college level reflects a concerning trend. “It feels like an intentional attempt to erase the subject from academia,” she added.

During the press conference, scholars and students from the Sanskrit Department at Jammu University voiced their support and expressed disappointment over the continued marginalization of the subject. They argued that without a proactive effort to integrate Sanskrit into academic curricula, the rich heritage and linguistic legacy associated with it could be lost. The group warned of large-scale protests if immediate corrective action isn’t taken by the administration to rectify this exclusion.

“We demand that posts for Sanskrit teachers be opened without further delay,” said Sharma, urging the Education Ministry to recognize the importance of Sanskrit for cultural preservation and intellectual growth.
