Nobel Peace Prize to Be Presented in Norway

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has received 287 nominations for this year's award, with potential contenders ranging from humanitarian organisations to international institutions and political figures. The prize also marks its 125th anniversary.

OSLO, Oct 9: The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in Oslo on Friday, with speculation mounting over who will receive one of the world’s most prestigious international honours. This year’s contenders are believed to include humanitarian organisations, international courts, children’s rights advocates and individuals working to promote peace amid ongoing global conflicts.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee received 287 nominations for the award, slightly more than a quarter of which were organisations. While several names have attracted attention in prediction markets, the committee’s final decision remains closely guarded.

Potential contenders reportedly include the International Space Station, emergency response teams operating in Sudan, advocates for children affected by the war in Ukraine and two leading international courts. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also emerged as a subject of speculation.

US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to receive the honour, has remained in the spotlight amid his administration’s conflict with Iran. However, speculation surrounding possible candidates does not indicate who the committee will ultimately select.

The Nobel Peace Prize recognises efforts to promote peace, strengthen international cooperation and advance fraternity among nations. Experts say the committee often considers the long-term impact of nominees’ work and their contributions to peaceful solutions to international disputes.

Last year’s award went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in recognition of her campaign for a democratic transition in Venezuela. She was praised as a woman who kept the spirit of democracy alive despite mounting challenges in her country.

Machado later presented her Nobel medal to Trump following the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by the United States. However, the gesture did not transfer the award itself, as the Nobel Committee has clarified that the distinction cannot be passed on to another person.

Nominations for the Peace Prize may be submitted by an authorised group that includes heads of state, national legislators, university professors, directors of foreign policy institutes, previous Nobel laureates and members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The nomination process allows a broad range of individuals and institutions to be considered, although the committee does not publicly disclose the complete list of candidates during the initial period.

Nobel announcements continue across disciplines

The Peace Prize announcement follows the presentation of several other Nobel awards earlier this week.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognised three scientists whose research contributed to understanding how the immune system regulates itself. Their work has helped advance knowledge of the mechanisms that enable the body to distinguish between harmful threats and its own tissues.

The Physics Prize honoured research that improved understanding of neutrinos, elusive subatomic particles that have challenged scientists for decades. The Chemistry Prize recognised research into molecular mirror images, an area of science with important applications in pharmaceutical development.

Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson received the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday. The Swedish Academy recognised her inventive writing, which combines classical influences with contemporary ideas and moves between poetry and prose.

The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences is scheduled to be announced on Monday, completing this year’s sequence of announcements.

The Nobel awards recognise achievements across scientific research, literature, economic sciences and efforts to advance peace. The Peace Prize differs from the other categories in that it is announced and presented in Norway, while the remaining Nobel awards are presented in Sweden.

The monetary award for this year’s Nobel Prizes is 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately USD 1.2 million. The amount applies whether the prize is awarded to one individual, shared among several laureates or presented to an organisation.

Peace Prize marks 125 years

The 2026 award carries additional significance as the Nobel Peace Prize marks its 125th anniversary. Since the first awards in 1901, the distinction has recognised 112 individuals and 28 organisations, according to the figures provided for this year’s anniversary.

Humanitarian institutions have played a prominent role in the prize’s history. The International Committee of the Red Cross has received the award three times, while the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has won it twice.

Women have historically been underrepresented among individual recipients. Of the 112 individual laureates cited in the anniversary figures, 20 have been women, although eight women received the distinction during the 15 years preceding this year’s award.

Malala Yousafzai remains the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She received the honour in 2014 at the age of 17 for her advocacy of children’s education and her opposition to the suppression of girls’ educational rights.

The United States has the highest number of laureates associated with a single country, with 24 awards attributed to American individuals or institutions. The United Kingdom follows with 13, while Switzerland has 11.

Barack Obama, who received the Peace Prize in 2009, remains the most recent American president to have won the award as an individual identified as American in the cited historical figures.

Despite its international prominence, the Peace Prize has not been awarded on 19 occasions, primarily during the two world wars and other periods when the committee decided that no nominee sufficiently met the required standards.

One notable instance occurred in 1948, following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi had been nominated 12 times but never received the award, and the committee did not present a Peace Prize that year.

The prize’s history has also included controversial nominations. In 1939, a Swedish parliamentarian nominated Adolf Hitler, but withdrew the nomination on February 1, explaining that it had not been intended seriously.

Global attention turns to Oslo

The announcement is expected to draw international attention as conflicts, humanitarian emergencies and geopolitical tensions continue to shape global affairs. The award provides an opportunity to recognise individuals and organisations whose work seeks to reduce violence, protect vulnerable populations and encourage cooperation between nations.

Although prediction markets and public commentary have generated considerable interest in possible recipients, the committee’s decision will ultimately determine which nominee receives the distinction.

As the Nobel Peace Prize enters its 125th year, its selection will again raise questions about how peace should be defined and which efforts deserve international recognition. The announcement will add another chapter to a history shaped by humanitarian action, democratic movements, diplomacy and the pursuit of peaceful solutions to global challenges.
