North Korea Completes 50,000-Unit Housing Project in Pyongyang: KCNA
Landmark construction initiative unveiled at 2021 party congress concluded ahead of key political gathering
Korea, Feb 17 : North Korea on Tuesday announced the completion of the Pyongyang 50,000 housing project, describing it as a major milestone achieved ahead of the upcoming party congress later this month.
According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency, the large-scale construction campaign prioritised during the eighth congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea has been finalised as part of broader efforts to improve living standards and promote national development.
The initiative, championed by leader Kim Jong-un, was first unveiled in 2021 to address housing shortages in the capital. Under the plan, 40,000 apartments were built in the Songsin, Songhwa and Hwasong districts between 2022 and 2025, with the remaining 10,000 units recently completed.
KCNA reported that Kim attended an inauguration ceremony on Monday, accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju-ae. During the event, he signalled plans for even more ambitious construction efforts in the coming years and said further milestones would be presented at the ninth party congress.
Participants for the major political meeting have already begun arriving in the capital. Observers in Seoul had anticipated that authorities would finalise the flagship housing development before convening the congress, where policy priorities on the economy, defence and foreign affairs are expected to be outlined.
State media is likely to project the housing initiative as a signature achievement aimed at reinforcing domestic support ahead of the high-level party gathering.
