NSE Set to Launch Long-Awaited IPO in September

The National Stock Exchange is preparing for a September 21-week listing after receiving regulatory clearance, potentially making the offering one of India’s most closely watched market debuts.

India, Sep 05 : India’s National Stock Exchange is preparing to launch its long-awaited initial public offering in the week beginning September 21 after receiving regulatory approval, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The proposed listing is expected to draw significant attention from investors because of NSE’s dominant position in India’s capital markets and its role in operating the benchmark Nifty 50 index.

NSE could command a valuation of around $47 billion in the IPO, while its estimated value in the unlisted market is about $55 billion. Existing shareholders are expected to sell their holdings through an offer-for-sale structure rather than the exchange raising fresh capital.

The price band is likely to be announced by September 15, with the book-building process expected to begin on September 11, according to the sources.

The planned offering marks a major development for NSE, whose IPO plans have faced delays since 2016 amid regulatory scrutiny and investigations. Recent settlements with the Securities and Exchange Board of India have helped clear key obstacles surrounding the listing.

The exchange remains one of the world’s largest derivatives markets by the number of contracts traded. Its extensive trading infrastructure and ownership of the Nifty 50 index have made it a central institution in India’s financial system.

The IPO is also arriving during a period of strong activity in India’s primary market. Investors are closely monitoring new listings for opportunities as companies seek to tap growing domestic participation in equities.

However, the NSE offering could also intensify competition for investor capital, particularly if several large IPOs come to market around the same period.

The exchange’s listing would give existing shareholders an opportunity to monetize part of their investments while providing public market investors with direct exposure to one of India’s most important financial-market institutions.

With the expected price band and book building dates approaching, market participants are likely to focus on the valuation, demand outlook and final structure of the offering.
