Omar Abdullah Accuses BJP of Attempting to Poach National Conference Legislators

Srinagar, July 12: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday launched his sharpest political attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since taking office, alleging attempts to weaken the National Conference (NC) by persuading its legislators to defect through financial inducements and political assurances. He maintained that his party would remain united and continue its campaign for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

Speaking at a gathering organised to mark the 26th death anniversary of Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah at Hazratbal, Omar claimed that a National Conference legislator from the Jammu region had allegedly been offered a substantial monetary package, a ministerial position and assurances linked to the restoration of statehood in exchange for changing political allegiance.

Without naming the individual involved, the Chief Minister asserted that such efforts were aimed at creating instability within the elected government. He said the National Conference was not vulnerable to political pressure or attempts to divide its leadership and legislators.

Statehood Demand Takes Centre Stage

The Chief Minister devoted a major part of his address to the long-pending demand for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. He argued that the Centre had repeatedly assured the people that statehood would be restored after the completion of the delimitation exercise and Assembly elections, yet no concrete timeline had been announced.

Omar said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had exercised patience and placed faith in democratic institutions, expecting the promise to be honoured. However, he questioned why the commitment remained pending despite the completion of the electoral process.

According to him, the people deserve clarity regarding the future constitutional and administrative status of the Union Territory rather than indefinite assurances.

Questions Over Different Approaches

The Chief Minister also questioned what he described as differing approaches towards Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring Ladakh. He pointed out that discussions on constitutional safeguards for Ladakh had been initiated while Jammu and Kashmir continued to await restoration of full statehood.

He argued that if constitutional arrangements could be explored for one Union Territory, similar urgency should be shown in addressing the political aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Dialogue Before Protest

Omar Abdullah said the National Conference had deliberately pursued dialogue with the Union Government instead of confrontation for nearly two years. He noted that the party had consistently raised the issue through constitutional and democratic channels while avoiding aggressive political campaigns.

He stated that repeated discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had yielded assurances that the issue would be addressed “at the appropriate time.” However, he said the absence of any visible progress had compelled the party to adopt a more assertive democratic approach.

The Chief Minister remarked that the phrase “appropriate time” had remained undefined despite repeated requests for clarity. He questioned what further steps were expected from the elected government before the promise could be fulfilled.

July 20 Protest in New Delhi

Announcing the party’s next course of action, Omar confirmed that the National Conference would organise a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20 to press for the restoration of statehood.

The event is expected to bring together political leaders, members of civil society, representatives of trade organisations, religious figures and other prominent citizens who support the demand for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s full constitutional status.

Party leaders believe the protest will send a strong democratic message highlighting public aspirations while remaining within constitutional limits.

Concerns Over Governance

The Chief Minister also expressed concern over the functioning of the elected government, arguing that significant administrative decisions continued to be taken outside the elected executive.

He questioned the purpose of conducting Assembly elections if major policy decisions and administrative actions remained beyond the effective authority of the elected government.

According to Omar, democratic governance requires that an elected administration be allowed to function with adequate constitutional powers and administrative autonomy.

Political Significance

Political observers view Omar Abdullah’s remarks as one of his strongest public interventions since assuming office. The speech signals a more confrontational political strategy after months of engagement with the Centre through dialogue.

The renewed emphasis on statehood restoration is expected to become the National Conference’s principal political campaign in the coming weeks, with the July 20 demonstration likely to serve as a major platform for mobilising public opinion.

The BJP has not issued an immediate response to Omar Abdullah’s allegations regarding attempts to engineer defections within the National Conference.

Looking Ahead

With the statehood issue once again dominating Jammu and Kashmir’s political discourse, attention will now shift to the planned protest in New Delhi and any response from the Union Government. The National Conference has indicated that its campaign will continue through peaceful and democratic means until a clear roadmap for restoring statehood is announced.
