Omar Abdullah Criticizes J&K Government for ‘Rubbing Salt into the Wounds’ with Nagaland Statehood Day Celebration
02-12-2023 : In a sharp critique, National Conference (NC) Vice President, Omar Abdullah, condemned the J&K government’s celebration of Nagaland Statehood Day, labeling it as a painful reminder for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah expressed his disapproval, asserting that such celebrations were akin to “rubbing salt into the wounds” of the region’s residents. The event, marked by cultural performances and official addresses at Raj Bhawan, was organized with the aim of promoting the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
Abdullah highlighted the irony in celebrating Nagaland’s statehood while J&K observes ‘Union Territory Day’ on October 31, a move that underscores the complex and sensitive nature of Jammu and Kashmir’s recent transformation into two separate union territories. The post-August 5, 2019 abrogation of Article 370, leading to the bifurcation of the erstwhile state, continues to be a contentious issue, and Abdullah’s remarks shed light on the deep-seated sentiments surrounding these changes.
