Omar Abdullah Secures Majority as Four Independent MLAs Back National Conference in J&K

Srinagar, 10-10-2024:  Four independent Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have extended their support to the National Conference (NC), enabling the party, led by Omar Abdullah, to secure a majority in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. This development significantly alters the political dynamics in the region, reducing the Congress party’s influence from a potential coalition partner to a minimal role in the new government.

The four independent MLAs—Pyare Lal Sharma (Inderwal), Satish Sharma (Chhamb), Choudhary Mohammed Akram (Surankote), and Dr. Rameshwar Singh (Bani)—have thrown their weight behind the NC, pushing the party’s numbers past the majority threshold. This strategic move by the independents ensures that the NC is in a strong position to form the government without needing to heavily rely on the Congress for coalition support.

Omar Abdullah, who has been elected as the leader of the NC legislature party, expressed gratitude for the independents’ backing. The Congress, which initially positioned itself as a junior partner in the coalition talks, now faces an uncertain future in the emerging power structure of Jammu and Kashmir’s government.
